The Nintendo Switch (Japaneseニンテンドースイッチ HepburnNintendō Suitchi?) is an upcoming video game console developed by Nintendo, and the company's seventh major home console. Originally known in development as the NX, it was officially unveiled on October 20, 2016 and is scheduled for release worldwide on March 3, 2017.
The Switch is considered by Nintendo as a "hybrid" console. It is designed primarily as a home console with the main Console unit inserted onto a docking station to connect to a television. Alternatively, the Console can be removed from the Dock and function similar to a personal tablet computer through its LCD touchscreen, or placed in a standalone tabletop mode to be playable by several people. The Switch's most distinguishable features are the Joy-Con wireless controllers that include standard buttons and a directional joystick for user input, motion sensing, and high-definition tactile feedback. The Joy-Con can attach to both sides of the Console to support handheld-style play, connected to a Grip accessory to provide a traditional home console gamepad form, or used individually in the hand like Nintendo's Wii Remote. The Switch supports both physical flash ROM cartridges and digital content for games and software, and will not use region locking.
From 2014, Nintendo had several quarters of financial losses mainly due to poor sales of its previous console, the Wii U, as well as market competition from the mobile gaming sector. Then-Nintendo president Satoru Iwata set into motion steps that would lead the company to embrace mobile gaming and develop new hardware to create a novel experience from the Wii U. The Switch's design was aimed to appeal to a wider demographic of video game players through the multiple modes of use, while retaining Nintendo's hardware uniqueness and innovation. Nintendo has sought support of many third-party developers and publishers to help build out the Switch's game library alongside Nintendo's own first-party titles, with over 100 titles under development by 70 developers as of January 2017.

When is the Nintendo Switch release date?

The Nintendo Switch will launch on Friday 3 March in 31 European territories, including the UK, France, Germany, Denmark, Portugal and Russia. South Africa will get the console on the same date too. The US will of course also get the console.

You can pre-order the console from a number of retailers, but as we explain above most if not all have already run out of their initial stock allocation.
How much does Nintendo Switch cost?

The Nintendo Switch costs £280 in the UK, $300 in the US and 29,980 Yen ($260) in Japan. That's pricier than originally rumoured and a tad more than rival consoles on the market.

Prices for accessories and games have been revealed too. Games cost between £40-60. The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild is officially priced at £59.99, for example, but is available for less from places like Amazon.co.uk. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is priced at £49.99, but can also be found cheaper elsewhere.

The Pro Controller costs around £64.99, while an extra pair of Joy-Con controllers is £74.99.

Nintendo has also revealed that membership to a subscription service, much like PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold, will be required for online play. It will also entitle the member to a free virtual console or two per month, although they are likely to expire at each month's end. The tipped price for this will be between 2,000 and 3,000 yen (around £14 to £21 at the current exchange rate).

What does the Nintendo Switch look like?

As stated above, the Nintendo Switch is essentially made of one tablet-like device with a 720p, 6.2-inch screen that can then be added to. The two Joy-Con controllers clip either side when portable, giving a Wii U GamePad-style experience. They then come off when the console is slotted into a docking station, so you can use the Switch like a regular console connected to your TV.

When docked, you can clip the Joy-Con controllers onto a separate Joy-Con grip accessory to make a fully-fledged gamepad.

What's more, each of the Joy-Cons can be used as a basic controller individually, allowing for two-player games when out and about. The Switch tablet unit has a kickstand so it can remain upright, like a portable TV, providing another option for gaming on the go.
What are the Nintendo Switch specifications?

We've know what it looks like and what it's like to play, but we will still have to wait to find out detailed hardware specs, as Nintendo has yet to publish them.

Nvidia has previously stated that it is making the processor inside the console and a spec leak claimed that the CPU and GPU will be based heavily on the Nvidia Tegra X1 chipset - much like the new Nvidia Shield Android TV box. We still believe that to be the case.

It effectively means it has 256-core Maxwell graphics processing and an octa-core processor. It should also be capable of 4K Ultra HD video playback, although it is said to have a HDMI 1.4 output so will only be able to play 4K video at 30fps.

We're not entirely sure of differences in resolutions when gaming at present, but Nintendo has confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild runs in 720p in handheld mode, 900p when docked. That's similar to early Xbox One and some PS4 games, so we expect other and future titles to get up to 1080p when hooked to a TV.

We also know that the internal storage of the Switch is limited to a measly 32GB, but you will be able to expand that greatly through an optional microSD card.

How can it be both a handheld and a TV game console?
The "Nintendo Switch Dock" is where the Switch lives when it's in your living room. The tablet slides into the dock, and then seems to instantly switch into a TV-connected mode. This is a bit like the Nvidia Shield tablet, which had a similar play-on-TV, play-on-the-go idea.
How's the battery life?
Nintendo estimates you'll get between 2.5 and 6.5 hours of battery life at a go. "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild can be played for roughly three hours on a single charge," says the company. That might not sound like a lot, but you can use a standard USB Type-C phone charger cable to keep it topped up -- or just slot it into the dock at home.
How quickly can you switch modes?
Nintendo's preview video shows people playing games on the TV, then popping the tablet out and playing on the sofa. Games should instantly switch, and play in either mode. On the TV screen, the Switch can output a 1080p (1,920x1,080-pixel resolution) image, even though its internal screen is 1,280x720-pixel resolution.
How do the controllers work?
The Switch has a flexible idea of controllers: two "Joy-Con" side pieces slide onto the edges of the Switch tablet, adding four buttons and an analog stick on each side, plus shoulder buttons, just like the Wii U GamePad. But when these are slid off, they can become standalone Wii remote-like controllers, held sideways to play games. They can charge while attached to the tablet, or when attached to the optional $30, £28 or AU$40 Charging Grip controller -- which has its own USB port.
Are they just tiny Wii Remotes?
They're a bit more advanced than that -- and since you get two, you can easily hand one to a friend for two-player mini games. There's buttons and a stick on the front of each Joy-Con, but also a pair of hidden ones on the inside.
They've got haptic feedback. (Example: Nintendo says you can shake a controller and feel like there's ice cubes moving around inside a glass.)
The right one has a built-in NFC pad to detect Amiibo and other connected toys, and the left one has an infrared sensor so it can detect motions in front of it.
